Tierra Hermosa Costa Rican Wildlife Reserve and Rescue Center
A Second Chance for Wildlife...
In spite of its reputation as a world leader in conservation, Costa Rica is confronted with the problem of illegal capture and sale of wildlife for the pet trade and for consumption as food. The urgency of this issue is compounded by wildlife population declines and extinctions resulting from loss of habitat, pollution and climate change. Tierra Hermosa Rescue Center was created to:
Provide a safe environment for rehabilitation, and when appropriate, release of animals confiscated from poachers and illegal captivity.
Educate the public on the importance of wildlife and the ecosystems they depend upon, fostering compassion and respect for Nature.
The reserve is located on 4.3 hectares (11acres) of mixed undisturbed and regenerating lowland rain forest in the Sarapiqui region of Costa Rica. It adjoins thousands of acres of forested properties under a variety of private and public management schemes. A small section of the property, historically managed for palm fruit production, is being replanted to native tree species. The general region is the focus of a large-scale conservation management initiative known as the San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor.
As of early 2010, a volunteer residence and some spacious cage facilities have been completed. The existing farm dwelling is also being renovated.
"We are presently operating this project largely with our own funds, but we wish to extend our gratitude to the individuals and interested organizations that have generously provided financial support. If you are interested in supporting, volunteering or have questions regarding this project, please contact us through this site or at andreacristina.com."
